What does Design for Manufacturing mean in electronics manufacturing?

Design for Manufacturing, or DFM for short, means designing an electronic assembly in such a way that it can be manufactured reliably, cost-effectively, and consistently. This includes, among other things, PCB layouts optimized for manufacturing, appropriate component selection, good testability, and process-reliable solder joints.
